Anxiety, OCD, and ADHD in Kids with Dr. John Parkhurst

While my usual focus is on women's health and menopause, this episode steps outside that to address something many of you are dealing with. Parenting has changed. With the use of the internet and social media, it may feel very different from how it did for past generations.

Anxiety is showing up in kids more often. OCD diagnoses are rising. And challenges with focus and impulse control are becoming more common.

For many of you in the sandwich generation, managing your own health while parenting kids and caring for aging parents, understanding what's happening with your children's mental health matters just as much as managing your own.

In this episode, I talk with Dr. John Parkhurst, a child psychologist at Northwestern in Chicago, about what's really happening with kids' mental health. He discusses the difference between normal worry and anxiety disorders, explains what harm OCD actually is, and discusses which treatments actually work. We also talk about ADHD, why anxiety spikes during puberty, and what parents can do to support their kids without losing themselves in the process.

What You'll Learn:

  • The signs of anxiety in kids that parents often miss or misinterpret.

  • How anxiety differs from OCD and why the distinction matters for treatment.

  • Why does anxiety increase during puberty, and what triggers it?

  • Treatment options include therapy, medication, and combined approaches.

  • How to support your child without reinforcing anxious behaviors.

  • The role of reassurance in OCD cycles.

  • ADHD, executive function, and parenting strategies that help.

  • How social media and technology impact kids' mental health.
